Project Introduction

As part of ongoing pipeline integrity management and asset reliability initiatives, Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) engaged Greenspan Concepts Limited to carry out the replacement of existing EGBA clamps on the 20-inch KCTL (Old) Pipeline located at Ogbogolo Community.

The project was executed to maintain pipeline integrity, improve operational reliability, and ensure uninterrupted product transportation. The work involved the safe removal of aging EGBA clamps and installation of new PLIDCO repair clamps at identified locations along the pipeline corridor.

All activities were carried out in accordance with approved engineering procedures, safety requirements, and industry best practices, resulting in the successful completion of the project with zero incidents and zero lost-time injuries.

Working Process

The clamp replacement project was executed through a systematic and controlled engineering process designed to ensure safety, quality, and operational efficiency.

01
Step

Site Identification & Excavation

Following permit approvals and site verification, all defect points were located, flagged, and excavated using mechanical excavation equipment. Existing clamp conditions were confirmed through physical inspection and survey verification.
02
Step

Surface Preparation & Defect Exposure

After exposing the pipeline sections, existing clamps were carefully removed where required. Surface preparation activities including cleaning, plugging, decoating, and inspection were carried out to prepare the pipeline for repair installation.
03
Step

Clamp Installation & Torque Application

New PLIDCO clamps were fitted on the prepared pipeline sections. Bolting, flogging, and torqueing activities were completed according to specified engineering requirements to ensure proper sealing and structural integrity.
04
Step

Recoating, Backfilling & Restoration

Following successful installation and verification, the repaired sections were recoated using Polyken wrapping systems. The excavated areas were then backfilled, restored, and cleaned, returning the site to its original condition before demobilization.

Project Outcome

The project successfully achieved the replacement of the identified EGBA clamps at KP 22.5 using new PLIDCO repair clamps. The work restored the integrity of the affected pipeline section and enhanced the reliability of the 20-inch KCTL (Old) Pipeline.

In addition, investigative excavation was performed at the suspected location identified as EID 2138140 (KP 22.6). Although no clamp was located at the excavated depth, the activity provided valuable verification data and enabled proper documentation and site restoration.
